Professor of Practice, Leadership Studies

Department Description:

The University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) and the Department of Leadership Studies (DLS) within SOLES offers programs for aspiring leaders who seek to make an impact, for those who want to develop innovative and creative ideas and channel them into real change, and for those who value communication and collaboration. DLS places social justice, interculturalism, and providing students with an international global perspective of leadership at the core of their interdisciplinary designed curriculum. This curriculum, which focuses on connecting theory to practice and hands-on learning seeks to have a lifetime of impact on students.


Detailed Description:
The Department of Leadership Studies at USD's School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) seeks a Professor of Practice to teach and advise graduate students. Leadership is a multi-disciplinary field. Masters and PhD graduate students in this Leadership Studies Program focus on a variety of leadership areas such as: for-profit, nonprofit, K-12, higher education and coaching and organizational consulting. We seek a faculty member who will provide expertise primarily for the specializations in educational leadership at the K-12 level: Education for Innovation and Social Justice (a completely on-campus specialization within the PhD Leadership Studies program) and Leadership for International School Leaders (This is another specialization within the PhD program. It is a hybrid program with some courses offered on our Madrid campus and other courses offered online). Both specializations are designed to develop the leadership knowledge and skills of individuals who desire to lead schools in ways that promote social justice. We expect that candidates for this position will have a doctoral degree in educational leadership, sociology, psychology, or other related fields.
Specific responsibilities to include:
  • Teaching Load: 3 courses in one term and 4 in another (Fall & Spring). Summer teaching opportunities are generally available. Preference for applicants with the expertise to teach at least some of the following courses: Sociology of Education for School Leaders, Collaborative Leadership, Design Thinking, Data Driven Decision Making, Educational Research, Policy and Practice, Educational Reform etc.
  • Advising. Serve on dissertation committees as well as provide academic and professional guidance.
  • Service: Attend department meetings and serve on department and school-wide committees.
  • Scholarship. Not required but desirable.


Job Requirements:

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
  1. an earned doctorate from a nationally recognized university
  2. evidence of successful teaching using alternative pedagogies and learning technologies appropriate for mid-career professionals at the post-secondary level
  3. evidence of some online teaching;
  4. evidence of the ability to make contributions in terms of supervising dissertations, masters theses and action-research projects;
  5. evidence of the ability to teach courses related to educational leadership and
  6. evidence of scholarly research.

Required: Ph.D. or Ed.D.
