Basic Function/Overview:
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

As the flagship student equity support program in the California Community College system, Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) serves the State's most underserved and underrepresented student populations. Utilizing a student-centered approach, Mt. SAC's EOPS program provides over and above personalized ongoing comprehensive support services to historically underrepresented and low-socioeconomic students in order to increase their sense of belonging, self-efficacy and awareness of opportunities to help students achieve their academic and personal goals. The EOPS Counselors' scope of services include counseling/advising strategies that support the educational aspirations of EOPS students.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Provide comprehensive counseling services to a culturally diverse student population including academic, career, and personal counseling
2. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record
3. Counsel students in discovering and clarifying their educational and career goals
4. Provide assistance to students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties
5. Assist students in interpreting certificate, associate degree, and university transfer-related requirements
6. Facilitate the growth, development, and success of EOPS/CARE students
7. Facilitate EOPS Orientations and academic success workshops for students
8. Counsel and follow up with EOPS students on academic/progress probation
9. Assist students in developing student educational plans (abbreviated and comprehensive)
10. Participate in curriculum development
11. Participate in professional development activities
12. Perform other counseling related duties as assigned to meet the College mission as well as the mission of EOPS which includes providing over, above, and in addition to services to EOPS/CARE students
13. Work collaboratively with other college departments (Counseling, Financial Aid, Admissions, Assessment, Career/Transfer, Health Services, ACCESS, CalWORKs, REACH, Dream, Outreach, Veterans)
14. Instruct, counsel, and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, and meet student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
15. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in EOPS/CARE department and Student Services division meetings and campus committees
16. Participate in accreditation, program review, and processes for institutional planning
17. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies
18. Attend, participate, and present professional development, meetings, and various College committees and advisory groups to provide service to the college and participate in shared governance
19. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract


Required Qualifications:
A. The following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
1. Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent; AND meet the additional requirements for EOPS Counselors as specified in California Title 5 Regulation 56264:
a. Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR
b. Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; AND
c. In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR
2. California Community College credential, Valid for Life (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.); AND
B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

The incumbent may periodically be required to travel to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California drivers license.

Conditions of Employment:
This is a full-time, tenure-track 11-month, categorically-funded contract position that begins in the 2020-21 academic year. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.

Official offers of employment are made by Mt. San Antonio College Human Resources and are made contingent upon Board approval. It is also required that a final offer of employment will only be made after the candidate has successfully been live scanned and clearance for employment is authorized by Human Resources. Costs for live scan services shall be borne by the candidate.

Selection Procedure:
