Job Description:
The university seeks an individual with a strong interest in working at a mission driven, faith-based institution. The role of a Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant in working with students and the responsibilities of the position are significantly tethered in the university's contemporary Roman Catholic mission. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant provides patient care to students of the University of San Diego at the Student Health Center. Provides general supervision of the clinical practice of nursing and medical assistants. Under the direction of the SHC Director, the Supervising Physician and/or AVP of Student Affairs for Student Wellness, may collaborate to develop and implement Wellness area and campus-wide educational and health promotion projects and programs. Is knowledgeable of principles of General Preventive Medicine, Infectious Disease Prevention and Management, Integrated Care, Leadership and Continuous Quality Improvement processes and in working with the campus community to improve the health and wellness of students. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. Reports to Supervising Physician or Director regularly.

This is a temporary, non-benefit based position (per diem) with an anticipated assignment end date of May 26, 2019. Anticipating a need of 1-2 days per week. Possibility to extend assignmnet based on 2020 budget.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Primarily responsible to provide patient care to USD students for common acute and episodic conditions, chronic diseases and preventive health care.
  • Contributes to the Continuous Quality Improvement processes in support of AAAHC standards.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and able to work collaboratively with clinical staff, Wellness colleagues and other campus colleagues when indicated.

    Employee must possess a clear knowledge of and competence in the following:

    1.Patient Care
  • Under a supervising physician, functions as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant in examining, managing and treating USD students.
  • Examines, manages and treats USD students.
  • Performs physical exams, takes histories, obtains objective data and assesses clinical status of patients.
  • Recognizes, initiates interventions and manages episodic or chronic disease processes.
  • Works under written standardized protocols for NPs or PAs (dependent on training).
  • Uses a comprehensive approach to clinical and diagnostic assessment and patient care.
  • Screens charts, laboratory and X-ray results for reports.
  • Advises supervising physician of patient's condition when indicated.
  • Refers patients to appropriate specialty referral and in consultation with supervising physician when indicated.
  • Follows up to ensure treatment is delivered as ordered and to ensure continuity of care.
  • Serves as clinical resource and clinical mentor to nurse practitioner students, clinical staff, Wellness colleagues and other campus colleagues as appropriate.
  • Takes after-hours call for SHC approximately every fourth week.
  • Reports to SHC Director regularly regarding clinical issues.
  • Be knowledgeable in patient counseling techniques for smoking cessation, improvement physical activity and nutrition behaviors, and infection control practices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    2.Administrative / Leadership
  • Functions as committee member of interdisciplinary teams with representatives from Athletics, Wellness, and other entities providing for the well-being of students.
  • Attends committee meetings and acts as liaison between SHC and wellness committees.
  • Contribute or lead in regular Continuous Quality Improvement processes, sub-committees and educational meetings in support of AAAHC standards. Additional SHC assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.
  • Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.

    3. Requires Ability to
  • Relate effectively to patients and work effectively with medical staff.
  • Identify abnormal and normal health conditions and implement treatment.
  • Gather complete and detailed medical histories.
  • Recognize and evaluate situations which call for the immediate attention of a physician.
  • Instruct and counsel patients on matters pertaining to physical and mental health.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and treatment procedures according to Delineation of Privileges including, but not limited to: cryotherapy, incision and drainage of abscess, minor suturing, and suture removal.
  • Assist and/or implement the referral process, provide patient education, advise patients on self care, needed follow up and suggested behaviors.
  • Monitor lab work and special studies to include advising patients of lab results after the appropriate medical practitioner approval and advisement.
  • Ability to handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy and diplomacy.
  • Know correct procedure for all medical paper work including, but not limited to, lab work and log sheets, immunization program, drug screening, and special lab tests.
  • Must assure patient privacy at all times and maintain patient confidentiality. Fully knowledgeable of Federal HIPAA requirements.
  • Must assure the protection of self, patients, and co-workers from undue exposure to contaminated waste and hazardous materials.
  • Blood born pathogen trained.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacotherapy when indicated (with MD supervision when applicable). Must have broad knowledge base of college health issues, general medical care, policies and procedures.

    Qualifications:
  • Graduate of approved training program for Physician's Assistants or Graduate Nursing program.
  • Current active California licensure as NP or PA.
  • Possession of a current valid CPR certificate is required.
  • Current knowledge of drug and treatment protocols common to ambulatory care.
  • One year of outpatient primary care experience which demonstrates evidence of ability to work independently.
  • Prior experience in specialty training such as otolaryngology, dermatology, sports medicine, psychiatry, student health is highly desirable


    Special Conditions of Employment
    Medical equipment, such as used for venipuncture, electrocardiography, pulmonary treatments, and others as needed.

    Salary: $50 - $60 per hour

    Anticipated Assignment End Date: May 26, 2019

    Hours: Variable, up to 16 hours per week (1 to 2 days per week)
