Learning Experience Designer, Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education

Detailed Description:

This is a full-time, temporary position with an anticipated assignment end date of June 30, 2019. Possibility of assignment extension is dependent upon business needs and continued funding.

The Learning Experience Designer is responsible for the learning development efforts of the Jacobs Institute. The Learning Experience Designer will work collaboratively with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create high quality, academically rigorous, engaging learner-centered curriculum and multimedia and transmedia content. You will work alongside Talent Partners, Program Managers, and SMEs (internal and external) to build brand new learning experiences and strategically tailor existing products for client/regional/national context. In addition, the Learning Experience Designer designs and coordinates across a series of events that include physical and digital learning experiences and environments (workshops, webinars, speaker events, networking sessions, roundtable discussions) reinforced through continuous learning, communication, showcasing. The Learning Experience Designer is co-supervised by the Executive Director and the Assistant Director of Operations and Administration of the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education. This is an on-campus position.

Job Duties:

Digital Development and Management
  • Plans and designs new programs and learner-centered curriculum with faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs), and adjusts courses and curriculum, as needed.
  • Designs online workshop/course layouts and flow for appropriate access to learning activities, readings and assessments.
  • Designs interactive and applied digital learning experiences for K-12 students, including experiences with virtual, mixed and augmented reality.
  • Designs presentations and authentic assessment activities.
  • Recommends appropriate materials (readings, video, etc) for online courses and apps.
  • Manages all learning content for the Institute.
  • Experiment with new content formats and learning models to foster highest levels of learner engagement and development.

Multimedia Development
  • Facilitate the development of multimedia content for K-12 and adult learners, and coordinate with USD ITS and media services staff as needed.
  • Partner with SMEs to conceptualize and outline content, scripts, storyboards, and produce digital and/or in-person learning experiences; scope and advise on required level of time, resources, budget, etc.
  • Design video and multimedia communication content for Jacobs Institute.

Production Coordination and Tracking
  • Monitors and coordinates project milestones and timelines to ensure deliverables are met.
  • Coordinates the collection of learning materials with SME.
  • Reviews individual course updates and development needs during the entire course development process.
  • As a copy editor, ensures clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work.
  • Provides clean, accurate, professional quality course content that is ready for deployment in a learning management system.

Quality Assurance
  • Reviews all content for accuracy and logical flow.
  • Coordinates team quality assurance reviews and instructional design projects.
  • Reads, edits, updates digital course materials, and quality assurance protocol and manuals.
  • Evaluates and adjusts course curriculum through student/participant evaluations and level of interest shown.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree and two additional years of related experience may substitute for the Masters requirement.
  • Minimum of three years experience in instructional design.
  • Experience with learner-centered design models, personalized learning approaches, and highly engaging and interactive digital, blended and professional learning models.
  • Familiarity with fundamental instructional, multimedia, and graphic design principles.
  • Knowledge of Universal Design principles, ADA compliance considerations and copyright issues related to instructional design and virtual learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with at least one major learning management system.
  • Experience using cross-platform multimedia development and instructional technology equipment including PC, Apple and Chromebook laptops, tablets, smart phones, audio conferencing equipment, video production and editing equipment, microphones, camcorders, digital cameras, and scanners.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and apply continuous innovation to update, upgrade, and build leading edge learning experiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and project management skills.
  • Must be responsive, team-oriented, reliable, and detail-oriented.
  • Experience in resolving complex problems in a dynamic, team-oriented work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in instructional design, educational technology, or equivalent.
  • Five years experience in instructional design in a higher education setting.
  • Five years experience in multimedia production.
  • Familiarity with virtual, mixed and augmented reality.
  • Ability to rapidly learn how to use multimedia software and equipment.

  • Familiarity with fundamental instructional, multimedia, and graphic design principles.
