POSITION: INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNICIAN I

Full time temporary, position available on or after June 1, 2019 and ending on or before May 31, 2020 in the Biological Science Department. Possibility of reappointment based on budget, department needs, and job performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Under the general supervision of the Chair of Biological Sciences and the lead direction of the Instructional Support Technician III, the incumbent has the responsibility of preparing the laboratory supplies and equipment. This includes picking up supplies locally, preparing requisitions and placing orders through the Instructional Tech III. This position will also be responsible for all department and university safety regulations and biohazard waste disposal. Duties include but are not limited to:
Preparation of laboratory courses BIOL 1020, BIOL 1050 and 1150, MBIO 2010, 3032, 4300, 4500, 4600, BIOL 4850, 4860, 4870. Each lab requires setup and cleanup of materials, this changes daily and sometimes during the day depending on the particular room used. Materials need to be arranged in the classroom for easy use by students and faculty.
Organization and acquisition of materials and equipment for laboratories.
Trouble-shoot and solve problems with materials or experiments. Purchase or order materials from Local or national vendors.
Preparation and mixing of chemical solutions. Collection of fresh plant materials.
Maintain a working inventory of disposable materials for each class: coordinate materials between multiple classrooms and/or classes.
Prepare all media and autoclave all contaminated waste produced by all microbiology labs: Prepare bacteriological stains, analytical test solution, and insure an adequate supply of materials for each laboratory use. Maintenance of equipment used in teaching labs: Clean and service microscopes, water baths, micropipettors.
Oversee laboratory safety. Ensure MSDS files in each lab are up to date. Check and restock laboratory safety supply cabinets.
Aid with dissemination of laboratory safety information to students in laboratory courses. Other duties or projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline
OR Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience
OR Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills to independently plan, prioritize and coordinate work assignments and projects, including handling multiple priorities and meeting timelines.
Demonstrated ability with technical aspects of the work assignments using independent judgement, accuracy and speed.
Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions, exercise sound judgment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group.
Knowledge of computers, software and external data devices

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles of providing support services.
Knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline.
Knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used.
Ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment.
Ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results.
Ability to plan activities and prepare schedules.
Ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.

SALARY RANGE: $3,419 - $6,007 per month plus excellent paid benefits. (Anticipated salary will be $3,419 - $3,761 per month, depending on the qualifications of the successful finalist.) The California State University offers a premium benefit package that includes, but is not limited to, outstanding vacation, health, dental, and vision plans; a fee waiver education program; membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); and 14 paid holidays a year.
