Job Description:
The Director of Sustainability oversees the management, implementation and continual development of a comprehensive sustainability program. The Director will lead the department to minimize USD's environmental footprint, support new initiatives for sustainable development, promote program integration and collaboration with USD's academic, research and educational programs, and realize meaningful operational cost savings through efficiency programs. For Facilities Management, this position oversees the campus Energy Manager to plan, manage, administer and evaluate the university energy management program and utility budget. The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic long-range plan for sustainability for the University of San Diego that focuses on the environmental, financial and social impacts. Program initiatives will span multiple program areas including energy, water, waste and transportation and reach multiple audiences.

The Director reports to the AVP for Facilities Management. The Director supervises the Sustainability Coordinator, Climate and Energy Manager, Manager of the San Diego Climate Collaborative, as well as staff in the Electronics Recycling Center (ERC), and all associated student workers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

SDG&E Partnership Implementation
Program Development and Oversight
The Director will be responsible for program development under the Office of Sustainability. Examples of program oversight include:
  • Lead the continued updating and implementation of our comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CAP) aimed at minimizing the campus' environmental footprint that also aims to achieve cost savings for the university.
  • Coordinate and implement environmental assessments and rating programs such as STARS on behalf of the institution.
  • Provide sustainability leadership within the local community and in higher education by supporting and engaging in community environmental initiatives.
  • Represent the institution on boards as they relate to energy and sustainability (i.e. San Diego Climate Collaborative)
  • Make recommendations for efficiencies in the areas of energy, water, waste, and transportation.
  • Support and work directly with students and faculty interested in doing academic work or projects that focus on campus sustainability issues.

    Grant Program Oversight
    The Director is the Principal Investigator of the SDG&E Partnership. The goal of this partnership is to enhance existing efforts, promote new efforts and establish a collaborative environment to share ideas about sustainability. Activities include the supervision of personnel that are responsible for:
  • On-going GHG inventory and implementation of GHG reduction as outlined in the Climate Action Plan (CAP);
  • Reduction of overall energy consumption (kWh) in existing equipment;
  • Reduction of campus demand (kW) in existing equipment;
  • Reduction of campus gas consumption (therms) in existing equipment;
  • Increasing use of renewable energy, both generated on-site and purchased as it relates to GHG reduction plan;
  • Education of campus audiences in identifying and adopting energy-saving practices not only on campus but also in their careers and homes.

    Community Engagement and Strategic Partnership Development
    The Director will oversee the publicity, promotion, and communication of USD's sustainability efforts within and outside of the USD community. The Director will oversee the continued development and maintenance of a comprehensive website and newsletter for Sustainability and be responsible for ensuring that all sustainable activities on campus are clearly communicated and designated as such. The Director will also be responsible for the development of strategic university partnerships with academic, athletic, housing/dining and administrative areas that enhance sustainability resources and increase capacity on campus. Areas of continued development include waste management and transportation partnerships with organizations like SANDAG.
  • Seek external grant support and partnerships for initiatives including energy, water, waste, transportation and other sustainability related initiatives.
  • Oversee the operations of the Electronics Recycling Center while providing strategic direction; ensure positive net revenue and compliance of collection laws.

    Utility Management
    The Director participates in FM's comprehensive energy program, assisting with utility usage tracking, promoting energy efficient projects and creatively looking at way to better measure and manage consumption. This position will be instrumental in verifying that our FM energy efficiency program, focused on measurement and verification of savings, aligns with the CAP. Other responsibilities include:
  • Research and suggest energy and water efficiency initiatives that align with the carbon reduction targets set forth by the sustainability task force that also realize significant cost savings for the university.
  • Taking initiative in researching and vetting new energy conservation projects and programs; Work with FM's Planning Design and Construction (PDC) and Buidling and Grounds Operations teams in developing energy conservation measures, including payback periods, and return on investments.
  • Assist with monitoring of the annual utility budgets including electricity, natural gas, and water.
  • Create additional means of benchmarking university facilities through an external program such as Energy Star.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with academic, research, student and administrative leaders to develop energy policies and procedures.
  • Develop grant proposals that that align with the strategic direction of the energy and Climate Action Plan of the university.
  • Research and propose alternative options for electricity purchasing that positively impact the financial standing and environmental footprint of the university.

    Budget Management
    Closely manage the department's complex budget. Develop, monitor and analyze a variety of grant budgets and revenue programs to ensure compliance and financial viability going forward.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in an area emphasizing business administration, environmental studies, or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.

    AND

    Five (5) years of directly related experience in sustainability program or project management, experience in an educational institution preferred.

    Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of the principles of sustainability in higher education; knowledge of project development and implementation; capacity to learn and evaluate new technologies in a timely manner.

  • Ability to be creative, to think outside the box, while relating to a very diverse group of people in our campus community.

  • This individual will be passionate and will always be looking for proactive ways to stimulate sustainable practices on campus, to help USD lead the way. He/she will find innovative ways to highlight and teach in our physical environment, to continue to promote USD's campus as a living learning environment.

  • Possess excellent human relations skills; be able and willing to represent the university in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve; establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

  • Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions; handle confidential information with tact and discretion. This position must be able to successfully exercise independent authority to carry out all administrative duties. This includes the discretionary authority to determine the manner in which to resolve and accomplish certain assignments.
