Full-time, tenure track faculty position.

Starting Salary Range: $55,703 to $85,443 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9.

Cabrillo College provides a generous doctoral stipend of $3,719 per year for eligible faculty.

Benefits: Cabrillo College currently provides a generous benefit stipend for employees plus dependents that employees apply towards benefit selections for medical, dental, life, and short-term/long-term disability insurance. Depending on health plan selections, in many cases full-time employee net out-of-pocket for benefit premiums may be $0 or otherwise relatively low.

Days Per Year: Faculty enjoy a 175-day work schedule.

Beginning Date: Position(s) scheduled to begin Monday, August 19, 2019, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Assignments may include distance education courses, may be scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and may be scheduled at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department:

The Construction and Energy Management (CEM) program provides students with the skills and training needed to obtain employment in the construction industry. This program consists of four (4) separate tracks that include: Construction Management, Energy Management, Building Codes and Standards, and entry-level skills in the construction profession and trades. The management programs offer three (3) comprehensive Associate of Science Degrees as well as a variety of Certificates of Proficiency and skills certificates. The tracks include construction project/business management, sustainability, and energy management, and building codes and standards. The entry-level skills track is a hands-on training program designed to provide basic building skills for those wishing to enter the construction trade(s). The department is interested in developing student-centered, innovative courses to address the career needs of our students

Our current curriculum includes construction project planning, oversight and management, and building codes and standards with an emphasis on sustainability, including solar-derived sciences. Other specialized training includes building science, energy efficiency, HERS (Home Energy Rating System), and, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). In addition, the program provides a variety of practical or "hands-on" training.

About the Position:

The CEM Department is currently looking for candidates with experience in the planning, permitting, construction, and closeout of residential, commercial, and heavy civil construction projects. This new faculty member will be expected to aid in the expansion of the department's participation in collaborations with local universities and secondary schools, and/or develop programs funded by outside grants.

This position may have the opportunity to assume the role of CEM department chairperson.

This position must stay current in the related CEM fields. Faculty are expected to assume duties related to instruction and shared governance of the college which include, but are not limited to, CEM Department program planning, coordinating CEM industry advisory committee meetings, curriculum design, Student Learning Outcome (SLO) assessment, holding regular office and lab hours, and participation in college-wide committees such as serving on Cabrillo's Academic Council, Faculty Senate, and Curriculum Committee.

Examples of Duties

  • Teach any combination of courses offered by the CEM Department including, but not limited to:
    • Construction Management with an "Integrated Approach" to construction planning and construction
    • Sustainability and Solar-Derived Sciences (Passive Solar, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, etc.)
    • Building Science, IAQ/IEQ (Indoor Air Quality/Indoor Environmental Quality) HERS, LEED, etc.
    • Building Codes and Standards
    • Practical and "Hands-on" Skills (i.e. Foundation Layout, Framing, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing Basics)
  • Maintain expertise and currency in all aspects of the construction field(s) and effective construction education methodology
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to various Lab Assistants and Student Assistants
  • Participate in curriculum development, program planning, budget management, and schedule development
  • Oversight of Cabrillo and CEM Facilities, tools, and equipment
  • Completion of required annual trainings, such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.


Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:

  • Any Bachelor's degree or higher AND two (2) years of professional experience OR
  • Any Associate's degree or higher AND six (6) years of professional experience OR
  • The equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential
Equivalency

Candidates without the specified degrees listed above must complete and submit an Application for Equivalency Determination. Additionally, candidates must provide documentation, as part of this application process, sufficient to convince the committee that the candidate possesses the equivalent of these minimum qualifications, including the depth and breadth of discipline knowledge plus general education.

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations/Licensure:
  • Recent successful teaching experience in Construction Management in a higher-education institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of culturally-responsive pedagogical teaching techniques and effective ways for engaging students who are historically under-represented and under-served.
  • Successful online teaching experience.
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) Certification
  • Class A, B, or C California State Contractors License(s)
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certification
  • LEED Green Associate or Accredited Practitioner Certificate
  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and/or Thermal related Certificate(s)
  • Residential/Commercial Building Inspector Certificate(s) (California and/or International)
  • Teaching experience, preferably in California's community college system
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Experience using desired outcomes to design programs, courses, and curriculum
