Applications are being accepted for the position of College Counselor/Assistant Professor in the Counseling Department at San Diego Miramar College. The Counseling Department encompasses the counseling faculty from multiple program offices, including General Counseling, Transfer Center, Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS), and Disabled Student Services and Programs (DSPS).

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Development and Matriculation, counselors provide resources to assist students in meeting their personal, educational and career objectives. It is the responsibility of all counselors to participate in the planning, development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of student success programs. This position provides comprehensive college counseling services, which may include, but is not limited to: orientation to academic programs and services, assessment, educational and career advising (including degree and certificate options), transfer services, liaison with instructional departments and other educational institutions, and counseling assigned special populations (including Foster Youth, EOPS, Veterans, Athletes, Undocumented/Dreamers, and First Year Experience/Promise).

Major Responsibilities:
1. Provide a variety of counseling-based services to inform the community about educational opportunities and programs available within the College and District; visit high schools; conduct workshops for schools and community groups. 2. Provide information and guidance to students and staff to assure appropriate matriculation of high school students into the college, and the transition of current students into four-year institutions; prepare letters of recommendation or nomination. 3. Perform educational advising for prospective and current students and assist students in determining appropriate educational goals; develop and lead student educational planning workshops; provide individual educational planning sessions. 4. Select, administer, and interpret selected tests and inventories that assess students needs and interests; utilize tests, inventories and assessments to assist students in making educational decisions. 5. Provide work direction and guidance to assigned para-professional and clerical staff; assist in the evaluation of assigned employees. 6. Assist entering students to complete a first-year academic program and consult with continuing students to complete graduation and transfer requirements. 7. Provide individual and group counseling by providing course planning, career exploration, degree and certificate requirements and transfer information; collaborate as needed with instructional faculty, classified professionals, placement officers, representatives from other educational institutions, and representatives from the community. 8. Assist students in finding appropriate campus resources and make referrals to outside agencies to assist in resolving problems and crises that serve as barriers to access, retention and completion. 9. Provide counseling services and recommend course offerings for study skills and motivation, as well as information regarding specific curricula, including transfer programs; provide counseling services for probationary or disqualified students; resolve student-learning problems in cooperation with the instructional program. 10. Provide counseling services to special populations, such as veterans, first-generation, homeless, LGBT+, undocumented, economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities, including advisement for both occupational and transfer opportunities. 11. Participate in the evaluation of institutional practices and programs as they affect students; assist with implementation of counseling-based services related to local, regional and statewide success, equity and achievement initiatives; plan and conduct relevant research in areas such as academic skill levels of new students, reasons for student attrition, and follow-up data on transfer of students. 12. Assist with preparation and implementation of professional development programs. 13. Assist with the development and implementation of a pre-professional intern or student teacher/counselor program. 14. Confer with faculty and administrators regarding individual students, new interventions or implementation of student services; serve as a resource for faculty in dealing with student problems. 15. May develop and teach courses in personal growth or related subject areas; participate in evaluation of instructional materials and recommend catalog revisions as necessary. 16. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling. OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A Bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desired Qualifications:
1. Completion of specific coursework and experience working with special populations demonstrated by: a. Completion of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages OR, b. Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages AND, Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and processes related to counseling services and other student success services. 3. Demonstrated knowledge of counseling techniques for individual and group counseling. 4. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling within a community college environment. 5. Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements for various degree programs. 6. Demonstrated knowledge of research techniques. 7. Demonstrated knowledge of rules, regulations, and policies of student success programs and educational equity programs. 8. Demonstrated knowledge of technical aspects of counseling in a community college setting. 9. Demonstrated knowledge and interpretation of assessment tools used for career and educational counseling. 10. Demonstrated ability to analyze a situation correctly and adopt effective course of action. 11. Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing. 12. Demonstrated ability to counsel current and prospective students individually and in groups. 13. Demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the business community. 14. Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures. 15. Demonstrated ability to make persuasive and articulate presentations before groups.

Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,783.69 $7,793.19) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
