College/Department Information
Established in the summer of 2002, the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CBGM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) was developed to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine with the ultimate goal of promoting predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (4P) medicine. The Center's research efforts focus on two main areas: Discovery and validation of biomarkers for disease prediction and diagnosis; Pharmacomics and drug discovery for personalized medicine. CBGM is home of four internationally renowned programs in diabetes research: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young, the Prospective Assessment in Newborns of Diabetes Autoimmunity, the Diabetic Complications Consortium, and the Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Consortium. Additional research programs include autoimmune diseases, transplantation, and cancer. These research programs are supported by an annual extramural funding of approximately $12 million. The center houses several state-of-the-art high throughput and high content facilities for genetics, genomics, proteomics, drug screening and bioinformatics.
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative researcher to support our ongoing investigations in the fields of cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychological diseases. This position plays a central role in supporting core activities such as bioinformatics, rodent surgical modeling and molecular biology techniques. The successful candidate will demonstrate scientific curiosity, strong working ethics, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to working effectively in a team-based research environment.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include, but are not limited to:
BIOINFORMATICS
Perform bioinformatic analyses and data mining utilizing biological databases and computational tools.
MEETINGS
Participate in lab meetings and AU seminars. Assist the PI in drafting manuscripts and preparing grant proposals
DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT PROJECTS
Assist PI in designing, executing, and coordinating experiments that advance research in cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychological diseases.
Conduct in vivo and ex vivo experiments using rodent models, including surgical procedures, phenotypic assessments, and primary cell isolation.
Perform cell culture and molecular biology experiments, including cell culture and iPSC differentiation, molecular cloning, Western Blot, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, protein interaction assays, and immunocytochemistry.
Operate laboratory equipment and use specialized software for data analysis, statistics, and visualization.
Record, interpret, and summarize experimental data in a clear, accurate manner.
MENTOR
Provide guidance to junior laboratory members, including technical training, troubleshooting and protocol adherence. Foster a collaborative and inclusive research environment through active team engagement.
OTHER
Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Sciences, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university with one year of related experience.
OR
Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited college or university with four years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in developing bioinformatics pipelines.
Experience with version control management repositories (such as GIT).
Experience with Python, Linux command-line, and HPC environment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Familiarity with standard statistical methods.
Proficiency in debugging and troubleshooting bioinformatics data analysis pipelines.
Proficiency In R packages related to bioinformatics, statistical analyses, and visualization.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Strong problem-solving skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to self-manage and manage interdisciplinary relationships effectively.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research team.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Range: $62,300-$79,000 annually.
Pay Band: B12
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
