STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES (SAS) COUNSELOR
San Jose/Evergreen Community College District
Campus Location: San Jose City College
This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE Categorical, Non-Tenured (11 Months, August - June) position as Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Counselor in the Division of Counseling & Matriculation located at San Jose City College.
Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar.
This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Prepare, interpret and analyze information from assessments, and other information from medical, psychological and educational documentation to determine eligibility and to develop and implement accommodations and services.
2. Provide specialized academic, career, personal and disability management counseling to students with disabilities.
3. Develop/revise Academic Accommodation Plans (AAP) and Student Educational Plans.
4. Evaluate academic deficiencies of students with learning disabilities.
5. Administer, score and interpret mandated assessment battery for determining eligibility of potential learning disabled students.
6. Maintain current and up-to-date anecdotal records of individual counseling session with students with disabilities.
7. Assist students in the matriculation process. Monitor and track students' academic performance and progress in degree objectives to assure effective use of services and successful attainment of objectives.
8. Assess student learning outcomes (SLOs) for courses and programs.
9. Effectively teach, counsel and work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
10. Maintain liaison with other agencies providing support services to students with disabilities including the California Department of Rehabilitation, the Regional Center for Developmentally Disabled, Veterans Administration, and other community based social service agencies.
11. Recommend and coordinate appropriate services and referrals for students with disabilities to ensure equal access in accordance with Title V and ADA.
12. Participate in and contribute toward required state, federal and college reporting/planning activities for the SAS, including program review.
13. Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas, serve as faculty liaison on issues related to students with disabilities to ensure compliance with Title V and ADA Regulations.
14. Participate in counseling meetings for general counselors and represent the interests and needs of students with disabilities at these meetings.
15. Serve on department, college-wide, and district-wide committees in support of participatory governance.
16. Perform other duties as may be assigned in order to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
17. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
18. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
19. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.
20. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.
21. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.
22. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.
23. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.
24. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.
25. Foster a professional work and learning environment.
26. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling;
2. Masters degree in: Counseling; Guidance Counseling; Student Personnel; Clinical or Counseling
Psychology; Education Counseling; Social Work; Career Development; Marriage and Family Therapy; or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling;
3. Bachelors degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);
A.) Fifteen (15) or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework related
to people with disabilities; or
B.) Completion of six (6) semester units, or the equivalent, of a graduate-level counseling
practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and
Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities; or
C.) Two (2) years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
1. Counseling for students with disabilities; or
2. Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare
organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.
1. Previous experience in administration, interpretation, and application of the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility & Services Model(LDESM), including expertise in both cognitive and achievement testing.
2. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, to access student information, and to accommodate disabilities.
3. Ability to provide instruction to students with disabilities in more than one of the following areas: reading/spelling, writing, compensatory learning strategies, mathematics.
4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
5. Knowledge of community social agencies, services and resources.
6. Skill in group facilitation and process.
7 Experience at the community college level.
8. Demonstrated competency in American Sign Language/manual communications with the deaf.
9. Bilingual abilities, desirable.
Districts Diversity Requirements
$80,357 to $110,031 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2018-2019); Maximum Salary Potential $143,122. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
