Salary

The salary range for this classification is $4,678 to $11,547 per month. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $8,588 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Network Engineer to participate in the development of technical standards, testing, and ongoing technical support of CSU systemwide LAN, WAN, Wireless, Security, and other network infrastructure technology initiatives. This includes serving as a representative of the Chancellors' Office to the CSU technical working groups and acting as a technical liaison with CSU Common Network Initiative (CNI) Vendors, along with managing and providing technical support for the Chancellor's Office Golden Shore Testing & Evaluation Center (TEC) Lab.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director, Systemwide Infrastructure Services, the Network Engineer will:

Provide technical expertise and manage the Testing & Evaluation Center (TEC) lab located at Chancellor's Office Golden Shore location.

-Install, configure, and manage routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless controllers.

-Maintain and document appropriate remote access procedures to TEC lab.

-Perform set-up/tear-down for all testing conducted in the TEC lab to consistently maintain current CNI network baseline configurations.

-Routinely perform maintenance and upgrades to all installed devices in the TEC lab to keep current with current Approved Image and Equipment List (AEIL) along with testing new device Operating Systems versions recommended by CSU Working Groups and vendors.

-Work with current CSU CNI router, switch, firewall, and wireless vendors in testing new features and design options in the TEC lab.

-Work with CSU integrator (currently Deloitte) in testing CNI network designs, redundancy failovers, new software versions, data collection, and automated processes in the TEC lab.

-Ensure satisfaction and proactively seek opportunities to improve TEC lab services through regular contact with users and by seeking out feedback from the campuses, CNI working groups, and CNI systems integrator.

-Update technical documentation (e.g., network diagrams) to assure currency & accuracy on an ongoing basis. Assist in orienting visitors/users to the lab and its equipment, configurations, and other specifications.

-Maintain a searchable archive of test results performed in TEC lab (i.e., test library).

-Develop and maintain regular plans to support vendor releases for network hardware, operating systems, and software.

-Support local area network (LAN) and wireless infrastructure, including installing necessary hardware, upgrades, and/or patches and integrating new technology services.

-Point of contact for all TEC lab equipment and software inventory and correspond with the Chancellor's Office Asset/Property Management team as needed.

The Network Analyst will participate in and support technical working group meetings and assist in developing technical and architectural recommendations of network and network management issues and evaluating related technical and operational solutions.

-Attend and support CSU Network Technology Alliance (NTA) and Change Management (CMG) working group meetings, including meeting minutes, scheduling, etc.

-Help create technical documentation.

-Perform technical research.

-Track network vendor issues and escalate as needed.

-Provide network technical support as needed.

-Create various communications to inform campuses of network issues, changes, or updates.

At the direction of the Director of Systemwide Infrastructure Services, this position will also be responsible for providing support to Common Network Initiative (CNI).

-Maintain, track, and inventory CNI bulk ordered equipment for campuses and coordinate the distribution to campuses as necessary. This includes communication and shipping equipment to the campuses.

-Assist with organizing program documentation and regularly audit to ensure that program requirements are being met.

-Point of contact for providing access to SharePoint, Smartsheet, MoveIT, or other software applications to campus or vendor requests.

-Provide overall support in developing project-related documentation, reports, or other requested documentation.

-Actively participate and support the proceedings of the Network Technology Alliance (NTA) and NTA Change Management Group (CMG) working groups and represent the Chancellor's Office on other technology committees as requested.

-Point of contact for all TEC lab inventory and communicate with the Chancellor's Office Asset Management team.

The Network Analyst is responsible for any other duties as assigned. In addition, the Network Analyst is responsible for keeping current in the industry, including technology changes, trends, and best practices. The Network Analyst is also responsible for addressing any concerns regarding technical operations with the appropriate supervisor.

Qualifications

This position requires:

-Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a similar field or equivalent combination of education and related experience includes three to five years of professional experience supporting heterogeneous networks.

-Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch or equivalent router and switching experience.

-HPE Aruba or equivalent wireless systems experience.

-Palo Alto Networks or equivalent firewall experience

-Alcatel-Lucent Certified Field Expert (ACFE) certifications preferred.

-Aruba ACMA/ACMP/ACMX certifications preferred.

-Other network certifications preferred.

-Three to five years' experience in IT technical experience, preferably in higher education that may include: networking, help desk, desktop support, Web development.

Technical Skills

-Expertise in at least two of the following technology areas: switching, routing, wireless, and firewalls/VPN, and working knowledge in the other areas required.

-Proficiency with Internet and Windows protocols and standards, including TCP/IP, ICMP, DNS, SMTP, DHCP, IMAP, POP3, WINS, CIFS, is required.

-Experience with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, HPE Aruba, and Palo Alto Networks networking equipment required.

-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Productivity Suite and Visio required.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical Skills

-Working experience in managing a network test lab environment preferred.

-Knowledge of Windows/Unix/Linux operating systems and impact on network connectivity preferred.

-Experience with telecommunications wiring and cabling preferred.
