Detailed Job Description:
Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Chinese. This is a one-year position with no renewal, as a tenure-search will follow with an appointment starting in the subsequent year (AY 2019-20). The successful applicant will be able to apply for the tenure-search.

Responsibilities include (1) teaching Chinese language courses at all levels, primarily at the intermediate and advanced levels, (2) teaching Chinese culture courses in English, (3) conducting scholarship in Chinese language and culture and/or related field, (4) providing service to the department including curriculum development and advising.

Department Description:
THE COLLEGE/ DEPARTMENT:

The College of Liberal Arts is one of nine colleges within Rochester Institute of Technology. The College has over 150 faculty in 12 departments in the social sciences, humanities, and the arts. The College currently offers twelve undergraduate degree programs and five Master degrees, serving over 800 students. Undergraduate degrees include Applied Modern Language and Culture; Advertising and Public Relations; Criminal Justice; Economics; International Studies; Journalism; Museum Studies, Professional and Technical Communication; Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy; and Urban and Community Studies. The graduate degrees are in Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology; Communication and Media Technologies; School Psychology; Criminal Justice; and Science, Technology, and Public Policy.

Chinese is one of the ten languages offered in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. It is one of the three language tracks of the newly approved B.S. in Applied Modern Language and Culture, a unique new major that combines the intensive study of language and culture with significant experience in a technical or professional discipline. The Chinese program offers Chinese language in all levels with an emphasis in applied use of Chinese language as well as solid foundation in Chinese language and culture. Every year approximately two hundred students take Chinese. The Department faculty are highly qualified, experienced and enthusiastic, and provide engaging classes with a focus on active language practice and cultural competency. Students and faculty from diverse backgrounds work closely together. The Department houses a Modern Language Technology Center, where faculty can actively integrate technology in language teaching.

Job Requirements:
  • PhD or ABD in Chinese language and culture, or related field
  • Native or near-native fluency in Chinese and strong communication skills in the language
  • Native or near-native fluency in English and strong communication skills in the language
  • Demonstrated capability for active scholarly production
  • Experience in teaching Chinese language at the college level in the US
  • Demonstrated commitment to and evidenced excellence in the teaching of Chinese courses using communicative-based methodologies.
  • Ability to teach upper-level Chinese courses including Professional Chinese and/or Chinese for Science and Technology, and Chinese culture courses in English
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
