ENGINEERING INSTRUCTOR

Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Engineering Instructor in the Division of Math and Science located at San Jose City College.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach lecture and lab based courses in engineering and engineering technology for students to enter four-year engineering schools.

2. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

3. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

4. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

5. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

6. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

7. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

8. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

9. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

10. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

11. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Masters in any field of Engineering

OR

Bachelors in any of the above AND Masters in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry or Geology

(NOTE: A bachelors in any field of Engineering with a professional engineers license is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Desired Qualifications:
1. Recent college teaching experience of engineering courses such as introduction to engineering, materials engineering, engineering graphics, or surveying.

2. Two years of industry experience in related field.

3. Ability to teach AutoCAD and industry standard modeling software for preparing two and three-dimensional engineering drawings.

4. Successful completion of courses or certificates on current learning and instructional design theory to provide online distance learning.

5. Experience in active learning techniques and/or other student centered learning methods.

6. Experience in assessing instructional practices to inform ongoing improvement.

7. Experience in successful course curriculum development, and commitment to working with colleagues from other disciplines using interdisciplinary strategies to develop courses and programs to enhance student learning.

8. Willingness to serve the broader campus community (e.g. committee involvement, faculty leadership, student clubs).

9. Demonstrated ability to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students.

10. Bilingual abilities, desirable.

    Salary Range:
    $73,052 to $100,279 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2018-2019); Maximum Salary Potential $130,110. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
