Position Description:

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Biology Instructor in the Division of Math and Science located at San Jose City College. The primary teaching assignment will be in General Biology with a secondary assignment in Human Anatomy. Additional teaching load may be composed of other biology course offerings as needed by the department.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.


1. Teach biology courses at allied-health, majors, and/or non-majors levels.

2. Teach cadaver-based human anatomy course and assist with maintenance of specimens.

3. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

4. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

5. Maintain currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and use methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter.

6. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

7. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

8. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

9. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

10. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

11. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

12. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

13. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

1. Masters in any biological science


Bachelors in any biological science AND Masters in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Marine Science

Desired Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or Ph.D./Ed.D. in Science [STEM] Education.

2. Excellent academic background in general biology and human anatomy.

3. Demonstrated experience with specimen dissection, including human cadavers.

4. Demonstrated experience in effectively teaching college-level learners from diverse backgrounds.

5. Biological research, work and/or grant experience.

6. Experience in active learning techniques and/or other current science education best practices.

7. Experience in assessing instructional practices to inform ongoing improvement.

8. Experience in successful course curriculum development, and commitment to working with colleagues from other disciplines using interdisciplinary strategies to develop courses and programs to enhance student learning.

9. Willingness to share in departmental duties including, but not limited to, department and division meetings, program review, data gathering/reporting, assessment of student learning outcomes, participation on hiring committees, adjunct faculty mentorship/training, and strategic planning.

10. Demonstrated experience with SLO assessment and program review and familiarity with the California Community College Guided Pathways Initiative.

11. Willingness to serve the broader campus community (e.g. committee involvement, faculty leadership, student clubs).

    Salary Range:
    $73,052 to $100,279 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2018-2019); Maximum Salary Potential $130,110. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
