Description & Requirement ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
Our client, Aspire Public Schools, is a nonprofit organization that currently operates 34 high-performing, open-enrollment public charter schools serving 12,000 students in underserved communities across California. Aspire is one of the highest-performing public school systems in California, delivering a rigorous “College for Certain” education to students in grades K-12. An unrelenting focus on college preparedness led to 100 percent of graduating Aspire seniors being accepted to four year colleges or universities in 2010 and 2011. Aspire offers a high-quality education in six cities throughout California: Los Angeles, Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, Modesto and East Palo Alto.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Vice President of Advancement will have the opportunity to build the development function for the highest performing public school system in California serving 2/3 or more low income students. With Aspire’s significant scale and brand recognition within the education community, the Vice President of Advancement will have the opportunity to harness community and donor energy and build the infrastructure for a successful development department. After this function is established, there are significant opportunities for growth in scope of responsibility.
This is a new position at Aspire and this individual will serve as a key member of the senior management team, providing the strategic vision and collaborative leadership necessary to build and execute a development program that ensures Aspire’s continued impact. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated, entrepreneurial and strategic-minded individual to build a new function, diversifying Aspire’s donor base by leveraging the organization’s successful track record in fundraising and mission execution.
Responsibilities include:

Building Organizational Capacity
o Provide strategic and creative leadership for the development function including: develop and communicate clear long- and short-term strategic plans, and implement and maintain a structured fund-raising program.
o Build the infrastructure within the organization to support the development function and, over time, a development team.
o Work closely with the CEO and Board in preparing for donor meetings through strategy development, support materials and coaching.
o Support the broader Aspire team in developing a cultivation mindset; embed fundraising into the culture of Aspire in new and creative ways.
o Leverage Board energy and skills to drive forward development efforts.

Executing the Development Program
o Oversee all development activities, including individual giving programs and corporate and foundation relations.
o Oversee maintenance of donor management tools, employ online fundraising tools and identify new prospects and tactics to meet fundraising objectives.
o Prepare proposals and reports for individual, foundation and corporate support.

Cultivating and Maintaining Relationships
o Design and implement creative and comprehensive acquisition, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for major donors.
o Seek new foundation, individual and corporate funding sources and maintain/build relationships with current and past donors both personally and as part of an organizational effort.
o Establish and strengthen relationships with existing donors and the greater community in an effort to broaden Aspire’s overall development strategies.
o Personally solicit large, individual, corporate and foundation gifts.
o Provide a presence to the community and other external stakeholders in an effort to create broad support for the organization.
o Market Aspire’s program to philanthropic supporters to include regular funder communications.
o Work collaboratively across internal departments to execute plans and build strong relationships.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
* A minimum of 7 years of broad experience in development, with at least five years at a senior level in an education or non-profit setting.
* Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
* Proven track record of fundraising success with emphasis on major gifts and an efficient fundraising strategy.
* Demonstrated skill and success in strategic planning for development in one or more of the following areas: major gifts, annual giving, corporation/foundation giving or planned giving.
* Outstanding relationship building skills.
* The ability to provide strong and innovative leadership in developing and implementing programs.
* Ability to persuade and motivate others and command the respect and attention of leadership and influential volunteers.
* Demonstrated successful experience in working with and presenting to boards.
* Demonstrated organizational skills and experience in budget management.
* A strong commitment to and passion for K-12 education reform.
* The flexibility and readiness to do whatever is necessary to ensure success.
* Proven ability to work successfully and positively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
