The Environmental Management Participation Program for the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) provides
opportunities to participate in USAEC on-going applied research and development projects, and environmental
technology demonstration projects at Army installations worldwide. Project areas include Environmental Compliance and
Planning, Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Range Management, and Geographical Information Systems.
PROJECT DETAILS
An appointment is available at the Enviromental and Natural Resources Divisions of the Natural Resources Branch of the
Directorate of Public Works.
This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Applicants should have an understanding of the Virginia Stormwater Management Act including regulations
governing Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4), Virginia Stormwater Management Program
(VSMP) and Erosion and Sediment Control, as well as an understanding of the Fairfax County Public
Facilities Manual and how it relates to state regulations. Applicants should hold or be able to obtain a state
certification as an Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector.
Assist with reviewing and understanding civil engineering design plans for stormwater and erosion &
sediment control.
Perform erosion and sediment control inspections to determine adequacy of erosion and sediment control
measures implemented for each specific project and ensuring compliance with the Virginia Erosion and
Sediment Control regulations, the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook and permit conditions.
Assist with identifying, photographing and characterizing stormwater management facilities/structures.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree in Stormwater Management, Engineering, Water Resources,
Hydrology or related discipline within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the
degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental
disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and
compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Fort Belvior, VA and/or the host Installation.
The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to three additional years based upon recommendation
of USAEC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Fort Belvior, VA.
The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and
experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other
costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.
The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge
Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host
installation.
