Description & Requirement

Two postdoctoral positions are currently available in the laboratory of Dr. Mohammad Mir at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas, USA (http://www.kumc.edu/microbiology/mmir.htm). The research in Mir lab is focused on transcription and translation initiation of hantaviral mRNA . We have previously reported that hantavirus nucleocapsid protein (N) binds to the host mRNA 5’ caps and protects their degradation by the cellular decapping machinery. The rescued caps are efficiently used by the viral RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) for transcription initiation (Mir, MA et. al, 2008, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A) . One of the research projects in Mir lab is to define the host factors required for the transcription initiation by the RdRp. We have also reported that nascent viral transcripts are preferentially translated in host cells by a unique translation mechanism, operated by viral N protein (Mir, MA et .al, 2008, EMBO J). The second project is focused on N-mediated translation initiation mechanism. Interested candidates have opportunity to work in either of the two projects. Interested candidates with a PhD degree in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Biophysics and past experience in cloning, protein expression and purification, cell culture and translation will be preferred. Interested candidates are required to send a cover letter and an updated CV to Dr. Mir at mmir@kumc.edu .
