Description & Requirement SMART is a major new research enterprise established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). SMART serves as an intellectual hub for international research collaborations, not only between MIT and Singapore, but also involving researchers from the region and beyond. At SMART, we identify and carry out research on critical problems of societal importance. SMART is a magnet attracting and anchoring global research talent, while simultaneously instilling and promoting a culture of translational research and entrepreneurship in Singapore. Four interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) have been established to date: BioSystems and Micromechanics (BioSym), Centre for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), Future Urban Mobility (FM) and Infectious Diseases (ID).
Postdoctoral Associate
BioSystems & Micromechanics (BioSyM) Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG)
Job description:
This Postdoctoral Associate will develop experiments based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) and microfluidics (MF) and high-throughput optical microscopy (OM) to study stem and precursor cells, as well as the tissue microenvironments from which those cells are derived. Efforts will focus on mechanical characterization and mechanically based profiling of cell phenotype based on AFM/MF/OM signatures of physical properties (size, deformability, adhesivity, colony size), which are then related to downstream functions. This position will work closely with experimental and computational researchers in a dynamic team at BioSyM, studying biological systems in the context of mechanics at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. This position will be working in the SMART BioSyM laboratory in Singapore, with some of the time spent in Prof. Krystyn J. Van Vliet's laboratory at MIT in the USA.
Requirements:
We seek a Ph.D. graduate with expertise in experimental analysis of mechanobiology at the molecular and cellular levels. Doctoral degrees may be obtained in engineering (biological or biomedical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering) or physics (biophysics or applied physics). Experience in cell culture of related cell types is expected, and experience in at least two of the aforementioned experimental tools is highly desirable. Applicants are expected to thrive in a team setting with frequent electronic communication between Singapore and the USA.
Interested applicants please email to SMART Centre HR Office (hr_recruitment@smart.mit.edu) your CV, two publications highlighting recent research efforts, at least two recommenders’ contact information, post applied for and a cover letter.
