Description & Requirement

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL / www.pnl.gov) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the molecular biogeochemistry of environmentally important microbe/mineral interfaces.  We seek a highly motivated individual with an interest in experimental investigations of fundamental properties, structure, and reactivity of heme-containing biomolecules such as bacterial electron transfer cytochromes.  The individual must have expertise in handling, manipulating, and bulk characterization of microbiological materials, and in the application of analytical spectroscopies and/or microscopies for isolating and characterizing molecular-level properties of such materials.  In particular, we seek an individual with experience or demonstrable potential to excel in bioelectrochemical characterization, such as by use of protein film voltammetry.  Familiarity with other analytical techniques would also be considered advantageous; possibilities include but are not limited to protein crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, magnetic circular dichroism, optical absorption spectroscopies, electron beam or scanning probe microscopies.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.  The successful candidate will be expected to immediately contribute to an existing research project from the U.S. Department of Energy¿s Office of Science, and maintain a strong regular publication record.  The candidate will be expected to travel within a multi-institution project environment to help facilitate collaborative activities between PNNL and the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.

The opportunity is in the Geochemistry Group, in the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate of PNNL.  The Geochemistry Group is located within the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a world-class national user facility at PNNL. The successful candidate will have access to a host of state-of-the-art research equipment at this facility, at other laboratories at PNNL, and at the University of East Anglia (UEA).  Within UEA the post-doc holder will be a member of the Centre for Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, working with Drs. Julea Butt, Tom Clarke and David Richardson (http://www.uea.ac.uk/bio/res/cmsb), and have access to a suite of biophysical techniques, including protein film voltammetry, electron paramagnetic spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography. The position is immediately available and remains open until a successful candidate has been identified.
