Description & Requirement The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, University of Maryland, College Park (http://www.sph.umd.edu/EPIB) invites applications for open rank tenure-track positions in epidemiology. These positions represent a unique opportunity to join a growing department in a fully accredited School of Public Health. Research areas of particular interest to the department include, but are not limited to, social and behavioral factors in health and epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, cancer, infectious diseases (such as HIV/AIDS), and obesity. Special emphasis on diet/nutrition, physical activity, and application of epidemiologic methods to develop and evaluate disease prevention and health promotion interventions for translational research is desirable.
The Department’s mission is to improve health and reduce health disparities in local communities, the state of Maryland, and the nation. This is accomplished by using established epidemiological and quantitative methods, as well as developing new scientifically grounded approaches, that are applied predominately to identifying determinants of health and discovering and evaluating primary and secondary prevention strategies for chronic diseases. The Department offers a MPH degree in epidemiology, a MPH degree in biostatistics, and a PhD degree in epidemiology.
QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates must possess a doctoral degree in epidemiology. A record of professional publications and activities in epidemiology-related work that supports a tenure-track position at the rank is required. Candidates at the assistant professor rank must demonstrate potential for developing a strong program of funded research. Candidates for the rank of Associate or Full Professor are expected to have a fully developed externally funded research program. Research interests and expertise should align with those of the department and focus on population-based studies. Previous teaching experience, along with interests and ability to teach intermediate or advanced graduate level epidemiologic methods courses, is preferred. Demonstration of collaborative work is highly desirable.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidates for the positions are expected to develop or have a nationally recognized research program, extramurally-funded, multidisciplinary research (or demonstrate the potential for such activity), teach intermediate or advanced graduate level epidemiology courses, mentor graduate students, and engage in service. Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills are essential.
SALARY and APPOINTMENT DATE
This is a twelve-month tenure-track appointment with up to 75% state supported funding. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointments may begin as early as August 2012.
APPLICATIONS:
Applicants must apply electronically to https://jobs.umd.edu specifying 115612 under the faculty section.
