The Managing Director of District and School Partnerships will lead our client’s overall growth strategy efforts to ensure that the Los Angeles corps is positioned as the preferred pipeline for teacher talent and educational leadership and a valued resource for helping partners achieve their human capital goals. The MD, DSP reports to and works closely with the Executive Director to set a long-term vision and annual goals for the region’s placement and corps member matriculation efforts with the objective of maximizing the organization’s impact in Los Angeles. S/he is responsible for crafting and executing an integrated strategy to achieve the region’s aggressive expansion goals. S/he manages a team of talented professionals responsible for cultivating collaborative, multi-dimensional partnerships with existing and potential placement partners in order to create and sustain the demand for Los Angeles’ corps members. The Managing Director is a member of the Regional Leadership Team that engages in making overarching strategic decisions for Los Angeles and helps to guide the region in all functional areas. S/he consistently operates as an organizational leader and in a manner consistent with the organization’s core values, with the mission at the forefront of all actions and decisions.
The Managing Director will drive region-specific initiatives including our university partnership and early childhood education initiative, and manage others to outcomes on projects related to the matriculation, placement and induction of corps members. S/he is responsible for ensuring that the Los Angeles team is positioned to efficiently place all incoming corps members on the earliest timeline possible by developing and executing strategies aimed at increasing corps member competitiveness in the teacher hiring market, identifying sufficient vacancies in which incoming corps members can be placed and facilitating the strategic matching of corps members to partner schools. The Managing Director will also be responsible for building out the team’s operational capabilities through improved systems, processes and tools.
Scope and Responsibilities
The Managing Director of District and School Partnerships will manage a team of three full-time team members including 2 Directors of District Strategy and one specialist. Currently, our client impacts the lives of more than 20,000 in Los Angeles by placing 265 corps members in 100 schools within the LAUSD, charter schools/systems and early childhood centers. Our success in closing the achievement gap in Los Angeles depends largely upon our district and school partnerships team’s ability to successfully create and maintain strong partnerships with school and system leaders, and to ensure corps members success and satisfaction. In order to maximize our client’s impact in Los Angeles, the organization is projecting to nearly triple the number of corps members by 2015.
The MD, DSP will be responsible for:
I. Cultivating External Partners and Stakeholders
Building and maintaining strong partnerships with schools, districts and other community partners and influencers that enables better execution of our client's theory of change by leading the implementation of a portfolio management approach, specifically:
- Cultivating relationships and alliances with senior district officials, human resource directors and leaders at partner districts, charter and early childhood education schools in the Los Angeles region
- Collaborating with Loyola Marymount University, our university partner, to maximize corps members satisfaction
- Working with key internal and external stakeholders to develop tailored and compelling messages across multiple mediums to compel and inform partners
- Generating and delivering pitches and strategies aimed at increasing placement opportunities in Los Angeles.
- Understanding the dynamics of the landscape, the major players and their influencers and leveraging relationships with these key individuals, as appropriate
II. Matriculation, Placement and Certification
- Managing the strategic placement of corps members in classrooms, schools and districts across the region in a pre-k to 12 continuum to support current education reform efforts and maximize our collective impact
- Launching and managing execution of outreach campaigns to ensure that ambitious goals are achieved relating to corps members matriculating into our program
- Directing and overseeing communications with corps members and external constituents regarding corps members' matriculation into the corps, teacher certification requirements, orientation to the corps, and interview and hiring processes with individual partner schools and principals
- Working closely with the Senior Managing Director of Teacher Leadership Development, the two Managing Directors of Teacher Leadership Development, and the Managers of Teacher Leadership Development to ensure the goals of the team are achieved
III. Developing Growth Strategy
Working with the Executive Director to design a comprehensive growth strategy including optimal scale and five year growth trajectory, the distribution of corps members and alumni across the region’s geographic footprint, grade levels, subject areas, education leadership positions and partners. Specifically:
- Working with the ED to establish a clear and compelling vision for growth strategy in the region that helps drive the region’s 2015 plan and positions the Los Angeles corps to eliminate the achievement gap
- Understanding and interpreting the region’s landscape analysis and what drives that landscape to set ambitious, yet feasible, annual placement goals
- Defining opportunities and challenges across the landscape that impact growth strategy
- Understanding the political and other dynamics that define the region’s landscape, how it is likely to evolve over time and proactively identifying opportunities to strategically collaborate with external stakeholders to create a landscape that is optimized to increase student achievement
- Strategically partnering with Alumni Affairs to identify and execute on opportunities to promote corps member and alumni school and system leadership in the region
IV. Team and Operations Management
- Setting vision and direction and managing three full time staff members and seasonal staff to support district strategy efforts in the spring and early summer
- Building and maintaining an outcomes-oriented, cohesive and effective team culture that is integrated with other functional teams in the organization
- Working with team members to set and make progress towards individual development goals aligned with both team members’ long term ambitions and the needs of the team over time
- Synthesizing and creating data presentations, including district placement overviews and documents for external parties
- Building and managing data systems for strategic placement support
- Researching public education trends, forecasting long-term expansion plans and presenting findings to leadership team members
Candidate Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum 5-7 years professional work experience preferred
- Proven record of achieving ambitious results, both individually and as a manager of teams
- Proven ability to build and leverage relationships toward successful outcomes, build consensus, even in the face of competing priorities, particularly in diverse settings
- Exceptionally strong strategic thinking
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Superb organization, detail-orientation and project management skills
- Ability to thrive in a goal-oriented, fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment, including the ability to be flexible in project execution
