Description & Requirement Applications are invited for two Science Foundation Ireland funded PhD studentships in nanomaterials based within the Department of Chemistry at University College Cork (UCC). The research project, led by Prof Michael Morris and Dr Justin Holmes, is to combine ‘bottom-up’ chemistries, with traditional ‘top-down’ microelectronic fabrication methods to generate arrays of nanowires that will provide a technological and commercially viable platform for producing nanoelectronic circuitry. The project will involve the use of block copolymers as masks for generating arrays of semiconductor nanowires whose surfaces will subsequently be modified to generate arrays of functionalised nanowires (through organic and inorganic passivation). As part of the project, the successful candidates are expected to work closely with other research groups within UCC, the Tyndall National Institute in Cork and the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN), in Trinity College Dublin.
The candidates should possess, or be expected to obtain shortly, a first class or upper second class BSc(Hons) degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science.
The posts are available from 1 October 2010. The PhD positions will be funded for a period of 4 years on a stipend of €18,000 p.a. Fees will be paid in addition to the annual stipend.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Justin D. Holmes: Tel: +353 (0)21 4903608; Fax: +353 (0)21 4274097; E-mail: j.holmes@ucc.ie
Candidates should send a detailed CV, together with the names and addresses of two referees, to Dr Justin D. Holmes, Materials and Supercritical Fluids Group, Department of Chemistry, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.
