Employer:University College Cork
Location:Cork, Ireland

Job Type:Full-time
Deadline:Open until filled

Description & Requirement

Applications are invited for a two Science Foundation Ireland funded Postdoctoral fellowships working in the Department of Chemistry at University College Cork (UCC), the Tyndall National Institute (TNI), Cork and the Centre for Research on adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN), Trinity College Dublin.  The aim of the project is to combine ‘bottom-up’ chemistries, with traditional ‘top-down’ microelectronic fabrication methods to generate arrays of nanowires that will provide a technological and commercially viable platform for producing nanoelectronic circuitry.  The project is directed by Dr. J D Holmes and Prof. M A Morris and will involve the use of block copolymers as masks for generating arrays of semiconductor nanowires whose surfaces will subsequently be modified to generate arrays of functionalised nanowires (organic and inorganic passivation).  As part of the project, the successful candidates are expected to work closely with other research groups within UCC, TNI and CRANN.  The candidates will also be responsible for developing and maintaining instrumentation within the laboratories at UCC and TNI.

The candidates should possess the following skills:

1) Position 1: possess a PhD in Chemistry.  Experience in the synthesis and characterisation of semiconductor nanowires, the surface modification/functionalisation of 1D nanomaterials or self-assembly towards device fabrication is a necessity.

2) Position 2: possess a PhD in Electrical Engineering/Physics or Chemistry.  A background in fabrication, electronic engineering or device physics is essential and preference will be given to applicants with experience of electrical characterisation on the nanoscale.

The posts are available from 1 June 2010, for a maximum of 3 years.  The Postdoctoral position will be offered on a one-year renewable basis with a starting salary between €37,750-€44,304 p.a. depending on experience.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Justin D. Holmes: Tel: +353 (0)21 4903608; Fax: +353 (0)21 4274097; E-mail: j.holmes@ucc.ie

Candidates should send a detailed CV, together with the names and addresses of two referees, to Dr Justin D. Holmes, Materials and Supercritical Fluids Group, Department of Chemistry, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.
