The Research Participation Program for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) provides opportunities
to participate in USAMRMC on-going applied research projects through its programs in medical logistics, facility planning, medical
information systems, and development of new technologies to improve military health care. Project areas include chemical,
biochemical, pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, toxicology and immunology.
PROJECT DETAILS
A Postdoctoral appointment is available at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Immunology Branch .
This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Assist with development of a small animal model of intradermal immunization to test the delivery of influenza vaccines
with a novel Microneedle Delivery Device (MDD). Fate of vaccine at the site of injection and within the host will be
examined by whole-animal imaging, confocal microscopy and histology. Trivalent and monovalent seasonal flu and
additional vaccines will be examined with the MDD to enhance multiple delivery capabilities. Will include a guinea pig
model of vaccine efficacy. The effect of lead adjuvants will also be studied to find optimal combinations for intradermal
vaccination. Will include small animal handling, biological sample collection, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, cellmediated
immunity assays, flow cytometry, and in-situ fluorescence imaging. Participant will be involved in all aspects
of the project from study design and data analysis to preparation and submission of publishable reports.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have received a Doctoral degree in Immunology, Microbiology, Virology, or related discipline within three years of the
desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other
applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex,
religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of
background with applied research programs and projects at Fort Detrick, Maryland and/or the host Installation.
The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years based upon recommendation of USAMRMC
and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Fort Detrick, Maryland.
The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience.
Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed
for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.
The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for
Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host installation.
