Description & Requirement

ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences is offering a Ph.D. Position in a new project in translational oncology carried out jointly by the Medical Optics group led by Prof. Turgut Durduran at ICFO and IDIBELL – The Bellvitge Institute of Biomedical Research.

ICFO is a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona, Spain) devoted to research and education of the optical and photonic sciences at the highest international level. ICFO, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), is offering a predoctoral fellowship to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic graduate student who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment, as well as to obtain a doctoral degree in the Photonics. Ph.D. Program. The students at ICFO benefit from the extensive course offerings of local universities and focused instruction by ICFO professors while carrying out research activities at ICFO groups with local and international  collaborators.

The successful candidate will be working primarily at ICFO as part of the Medical Optics groups in collaboration with IDIBELL. Their research focuses on translational research bringing biomedical-optical methodologies from the bench-top to pre-clinical and clinical applications in cancer/oncology research. In particular, the candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of a tomographic imager in cancer models, the relevant data acquisition and analysis as well as in vivo testing on cancer models. These findings will then be translated to equivalent studies on humans and are expected to benefit cancer therapy in the clinics. The candidate should have a proven track record of excellence in academics and research. Experience in elecro-optic design, general experimental design, light scattering in turbid media, diffuse optics, image reconstruction methods and basic numerical programming (e.g. Matlab, LabView, C/C++) is highly desired. There are no restrictions of citizenship.

Conditions of fellowships
The fellowships are offered for periods of one year, renewable for a total of four years.
The renewal of the ICFO-UPC fellowship is conditional on satisfactory performance in research and teaching activities.
