Description & Requirement The Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine is the attending veterinarian and is responsible for providing oversight of animal welfare for all vertebrate animals used in research and teaching at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR); providing veterinary care for all UNR animals; and ensuring compliance with Federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines. In the execution of these functions, the Director will serve as a voting member on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); provide an independent measure of the quality of animal care and use programs to assist in obtaining accreditation from the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC); and maintain a detailed familiarity with Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding animal care and use, as well as, safety, health, and environmental protection. Maintaining this in-depth familiarity will be needed to ensure that all components of the University are compliant, and these regulatory and accreditation principles have been translated into standard operating procedures to promote animal welfare, quality animal maintenance, and quality science. Interpersonal and effective communication skills are essential, as this position will act as the primary public spokesperson for UNR components regarding animal care and use issues, and will interact with a diverse group of faculty and stakeholders to promote team work and build consensus. This position has a direct supervisory role for various staff in the Office of Laboratory Animal Medicine. The Director will also serve on the IACUC at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and provide animal care that includes periodic visits and reviews.
Required Qualfications:
A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M./V.M.D.) Degree from a veterinary school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), or a D.V.M./V.M.D. from a foreign institution and an Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduate Certificate issued by the AMVA.
At least four years of professional experience including management of a multi-species laboratory animal care and use program, preferably at a multi-school college or university.
A National Board Certification, or eligibility for certification, by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
A Nevada Veterinary Practice License or within two years of date of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of traditional laboratory species, domestic livestock, exotic laboratory species, and wildlife species
Experience in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Knowledge of USDA Regulations and Public Health Service Guidelines
Experience with the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC)
Previous supervisory experience
