The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean, College of Arts and Sciences. UAA is a growing institution with increases in enrollment, new academic, research and sports facilities and stable state funding. This recruitment offers the opportunity to lead at a time of change, to help shape the vision and direction of the College of Arts and Sciences and to build upon a foundation of achievement.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit within the University of Alaska Anchorage, home to over 4,000 students and 225 prominent full time faculty. The College offers 23 major areas of study and more than 20 minor concentrations.
The University of Alaska Anchorage is located in the heart of Alaska’s largest city and it is the state’s largest post-secondary institution serving more than 20,000 students. UAA is a comprehensive university consisting of a campus in Anchorage, three community campuses and one community college in south-central Alaska, and several extension sites in rural communities and on military installations. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated UAA as a Community Engaged University.
The University of Alaska Anchorage is part of the University of Alaska (UA), a system of major comprehensive universities and community colleges.
Anchorage, with an ethnically diverse population of nearly 300,000, offers a lively intellectual and cultural life, including opera, symphony, theatre, art events, and varied restaurants, recreational and shopping venues. Set between snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains and the ocean waters of Cook Inlet, the city offers ready access to state and national forests and parks, year-round outdoor recreation, and unsurpassed natural beauty.
The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences provides leadership and guidance in all aspects of the College, including advancement, intellectual development, program integration and management of all aspects of College operations. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, the Dean is the academic and administrative leader of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Dean is expected to promote the best interest of the College and to ensure that the goals of the College are aligned with and supportive of UAA’s and UA’s goals and objectives.
Qualifications
Successful candidates for Dean must possess an earned PhD or doctorate, preferably in one of the fields represented within the College; have attained the rank of full professor or a record of comparable professional experience; and have a record of academic and administrative leadership.
Preferred qualifications include: exceptional organizational and communication skills; a demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and diversity; strong budgeting and financial planning outcomes; a record of distinguished teaching, scholarship, publication and /or professional activity; success in fundraising; understanding and appreciation of Alaska and Alaska Native cultures and the Pacific Rim and Arctic Regions; demonstrated success in developing partnerships with the community; and evidence of creating innovative programs and initiatives.
