Description & Requirement Hamline University seeks a dynamic, visionary educator with exceptional leadership skills to serve as the Chair of the Teacher Licensure Department in the School of Education. The chair is the primary academic leader and spokesperson for the Department and has key supervisory, budget, planning, and assessment roles related specifically to Teacher Education. The chair reports directly to the Dean and works in collaboration with the Associate Dean and other colleagues across the unit to manifest university and unit level goals at the departmental level.
The chair must be an experienced, creative, and collaborative leader with a passion for teacher education, a distinguished academic record of both teaching and scholarship, and a deep appreciation for both the scholarly and practical relevance of pedagogical knowledge. Candidates must be committed to a constructivist approach, equity and social justice, and alternative pathways into teacher education. Individuals with creative, innovative methods for developing and promoting the professional orientation of aspiring teachers and who are interested in greater intentionality in the recruitment, preparation, placement, support and retention of highly qualified, talented teachers capable of addressing the complexities of 21st century needs of learners are preferred. Someone with a deep interest in working to effectively close the achievement gap, within a diverse community of colleagues, parents, and community leaders is preferred. Also desired is an effective teacher-leader capable of creating powerful support vehicles for the ever evolving needs of the field.
The chair must possess the communication and interpersonal skills needed to unify the department around a shared leadership and Unit level vision that will advance the HSE’s work in innovation in teacher education at multiple levels. Candidates should provide evidence of strong abilities to work effectively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and administration both within the unit and across the university and, externally, among diverse constituent groups and key partnerships with area organizations. Candidates should also possess the terminal degree in their field and be eligible for a tenure-track appointment within the School of Education.
The preferred candidate will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution, as well as demonstrated and successful leadership experience in higher education with a capacity for working with greater intentionality within the community and in collaboration with local education agencies in P-12 settings.
