Assistant Professor of Photography (Digital Imaging)
School of Arts and Communication
10-Month, Tenure Track Position


Responsibilities: Southwestern College invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in Photography & Digital Imagining. The program offers courses in digital photography, studio lighting, portraiture, editorial & advertising photography, darkroom, alternative processes, digital imaging, and website design. The program recently opened a new facility, revised curriculum, revised the certificate that prepares students for photographic industry, and created a new associates degree. Current and future needs include collaboration with Telemedia to create a videography certificate program.

The Photography & Digital Imagining Program serves students pursuing photographic and digital-based careers, transfer, fine art, and the community at large. The successful applicant will work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment through the Department of Art while teaching 3 studio classes per semester. The program works closely with visual arts, telemedia, graphic design, and journalism. This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, and extension site assignments.

Faculty are expected to play a proactive role in the updating and revision of their discipline-specificexisting course outlines and development of new curriculum, as well as the effective utilization of instructional technology, and a general understanding and support of on-line instructional techniques and andragogy; active participation in strategic planning and program review as well as departmental and discipline business; assisting in supervision of the photo facilities and digital media computer labs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Photography, Fine Arts, or Art OR Bachelor’s Degree in any of the above AND Master’s Degree in Art History or Humanities OR the equivalent, OR valid California Community College Credential.

Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities.

A teaching demonstration will be required of finalists.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful applicant should have a Master of Arts or a Master of Fine Art Degree in Photography and/or an Art Discipline with an emphasis in Photography and/or Digital Imaging, with at least 2 years teaching experience, and a strong exhibition record. Thorough knowledge of traditional photographic processes and digital imaging techniques is essential. Knowledge and experience with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Light room, and website design software is essential. Experience in non-traditional approaches, studio lighting, photographic and digital imaging industry, interdisciplinary work in digital media, and experience with maintaining mac computer labs, software, and servers is desirable. Other criteria and knowledge include the history of photography, and contemporary theory and criticism. Experience in teaching in an online environment.

SALARY & BENEFITS:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 6. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule. *NOTE:
Digital images can be on either USB Flash Memory Drive or CD. These images must be readable on a Mac Computer running OSX 10.6 (snow leopard) and a Windows Computer running Windows 7. Digital images should be .jpeg format. Image size must be at least 1500 pixels on the longest side (but no larger than 3000 pixels).

Foreign degrees require an evaluation for United States equivalency from an agency having membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc.
