Description & Requirement The Frost School of Music is seeking an individual with in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of audio engineering and music technology. This individual will join a well-established team of educators who administer and teach in the Frost School’s undergraduate and graduate Music Engineering Technology curricula.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of a M.S.E.E. or similar degree and industry experience are required; a Ph.D. is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of applied research and must teach theoretical and practical audio topics in laboratory and lecture environments at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Course subjects include analog electronics, audio recording technology, architectural acoustics, digital audio theory, audio signal processing, and software development. Specialized topics and seminars include psychoacoustics, low bit-rate coding, GPU-based computing, and advanced research in digital audio and media technologies. Candidate must also be experienced with the recording studio environment. Undergraduate and graduate student advising is required, along with specialized guidance for graduate thesis projects.
The candidate must assist with grant-writing, direct the research of thesis candidates, supervise studio maintenance, and enhance the research profile of the program. The candidate must be fluent with professional audio equipment, proficient in computer programming, and able to devise new proprietary audio technology. An individual with experience only as a recording engineer or as a music producer will not meet the needs of the program.
APPOINTMENT:
This is a tenure-track, nine-month appointment effective August 15, 2010 at the rank of assistant professor. The salary is competitive.
THE UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL, AND PROGRAM:
The University of Miami is a private, independent research university with an enrollment of approximately 13,700 students from all fifty states and over 100 countries. The main campus is located in Coral Gables, an attractive, residential community of Miami. The Frost School of Music has an enrollment of approximately 740 majors in 31 programs offering B.A., B.M., B.S., A.D., M.M., M.S., S.P.E.D., D.M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The Frost Music Engineering Technology program was the first professionally accredited four-year degree program in music technology in the United States. Undergraduate students pursue a minor in electrical engineering or a double major in computer science. Graduate students, who have previously completed a B.S. degree in electrical engineering or computer science, pursue original research projects. Approximately 60 students are enrolled in the program, and most graduating students are employed as audio engineers by audio manufacturers, as recording studio engineers, or in related positions. The program is housed within the Department of Music Media and Industry.
