Description & Requirement

Assistant Professor, Arts Management
Date Posted: 2/14/2011

MCLA seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor, for the college's growing undergraduate Arts Management Program. This unique program, one of the few in the nation and one of the only public programs in New England, is housed in the Fine and Performing Arts (FPA) Department, and is jointly sponsored by the FPA, Business, and English/Communications Departments. The curriculum is multidisciplinary: students gain exposure to visual art, music and theatre, and then consider these disciplines in relation to broader issues in arts management. The program is highly interactive, combining theory and practice; coursework is enriched and extended through opportunities for hands-on learning through campus cultural programs, including the MCLA Presents! performing arts series, MCLA Gallery 51 located on Main Street in North Adams, and B-HIP, an immersive, upper-level arts management internship program. Faculty and students also work in conjunction with the many outstanding cultural institutions of the Berkshires, including MASS MoCA, Shakespeare & Company, and the Norman Rockwell Museum, among others.

The successful candidate will be a creative, engaged and energetic professional with substantial experience in the field, an understanding of trends in the arts and cultural sector, and a record of teaching excellence. The candidate should also have a demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population, an entrepreneurial orientation, and the ability to collaborate with campus departments and outside institutions. The position requires demonstrated successful experience in performing arts management and familiarity with issues in visual arts management. The candidate should have the ability to teach a range of courses covering topics such as: nonprofit management, marketing, program development, fundraising, leadership, board/staff development, and strategic planning. Additional experience in one or more of the following areas would be desirable: national/ international cultural policy, entrepreneurship/for-profit arts models, and creative economic development.

In addition to teaching, duties will include curriculum and program development, advising, supervising internships, supporting recruitment efforts, and making and maintaining connections with other college departments and outside cultural institutions.

Required Qualifications: Advanced degree in arts management or related field (MFA, MBA or appropriate doctorate); substantial experience in managing one or more arts disciplines in a professional setting; as well as prior college-level teaching experience beyond the TA level.

Additional Qualifications: Teaching in a liberal arts-focused college or the ability to support the liberal arts mission of the college; experience with developing and managing certificate and graduate programs; familiarity with online teaching; capacity and ability to work with diverse communities, organizations, and people; as well as entrepreneurial experience, grant writing experience, and/or program management experience.

Deadline: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.  MCLA is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer with a long standing commitment to increasing the diversity of the employee community.
