Assistant/Associate Professor of Motor Behavior/Biomechanics The University of Texas at El Paso Department of Kinesiology – College of Health Sciences Responsibilities: This position is a tenure-track, nine-month academic year position with the possibility of summer teaching. Faculty will teach undergraduate and graduate courses including but not limited to motor behavior and biomechanics; advise undergraduate students; mentor master’s and doctoral degree students; engage in scholarly research and publication, including development of grant proposals to attract external funding; and participate in service opportunities within the department, college, university and profession. Qualifications: Applicants should have (1) an earned doctorate in motor behavior/biomechanics or closely related field (ABD considered but PhD must be completed before employment); (2) a strong potential for or record of academic scholarship as demonstrated by research publications and ability to secure extramural research funding; (3) a commitment to and potential for teaching excellence or a record of successful college or university teaching; and (4) potential for or history of active participation and/or leadership roles in campus, community and professional organizations. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates with additional expertise in statistics and/or aging, a strong collaborative research record, prior experience working in a multi-cultural setting, and interest in Hispanic/border health issues. The Department: The Department of Kinesiology (www.utep.edu/kinesiology) has a history of excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community service. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Kinesiology and also participates in the College of Health Sciences Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program. Current enrollment exceeds 450 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Faculty have successfully secured external funding and are currently involved in research related to gait and posture, fitness, aging, obesity and cardiovascular disease, and risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament injury. The Department has ongoing collaborations with local school districts, hospitals, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and several UTEP departments including Physical Therapy and Engineering. The Laboratory: The Stanley E. Fulton Biomechanics and Motor Behavior Laboratory is located in the Larry K. Durham Building. The primary lab space is 2000 sq ft with four additional rooms for subject preparation, office space, control room and storage. The lab is equipped with 3 mounted AMTI force platforms, a portable force platform, PEAK MOTUS 3-D motion analysis system with automatic digitizing, VICON 8-camera real-time motion capture system, 8-channel tethered EMG system, 16-channel wireless EMG system and a Biodex isovelocity dynamometer. Additional equipment includes a KT-1000 knee joint arthrometer, a Brower timing system, uniaxial accelerometer, treadmill, cycle ergometer and Clevemed BioCapture Pro for wireless physiological data acquisition and analysis. Fifteen computer workstations and a laptop computer installed with Matlab, ADAMS, SPSS and Minitab software are also available for research and teaching. The lab is equipped with both ethernet and wireless internet access. Other Kinesiology Laboratories: The Kinesiology Department also has research laboratories related to Exercise Physiology and Fitness. The Human Performance Laboratory is equipped for metabolic, cardiorespiratory, body composition, and blood analyses procedures. Instrumentation includes metabolic carts, a portable metabolic measurement system, ECG systems, cardiac output systems, treadmills and cycle ergometers, athropometric measures, underwater weighing, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a Bod Pod, bone density (DXA), and a wet lab. The Fitness Research Facility is equipped with new state-of-the art cardiovascular and resistance training equipment, in addition to equipment used for plyometric, power, agility, balance, and core body strength training. The College: The College of Health Sciences (www.utep.edu/chs) provides teaching, research and services related to the applied health sciences. Disciplines within the College include Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Health Promotion, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, Speech-Language Pathology and a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the School of Nursing, housed in the same building. The College is staffed by over 50 full-time faculty members and serves more than 1,500 students. It is nationally recognized for innovative research in Hispanic health and health disparities. Its strong research program has generated more than $26 million in funding in the past three years. In Fall 2010, the College will move to a new $60 million building on main campus. This 132,000 ft2 facility will house state-of-the art clinical and research laboratories, innovative teaching spaces, and faculty and administration offices.
